Blogspiration: Start a Discussion

One of the best ways to increase engagement with your blog is to actually invite people to join in a discussion.

For this week’s blogspiration, pick a somewhat controversial topic in your field and pick a side that you believe most of your ideal readers agree with. ⬅ This part is important; people like to have their opinions validated, and they’ll enjoy weighing in on the topic and feeling “right.”

For example, my food blog concentrates a lot on organic food, and I know that most (if not all) of my readers buy organic when they can. So when I put up a post asking for discussion on whether or not organic food is worth the cost, I already knew how most of my readers would answer.

That post still got one of the highest engagement rates of any of my posts.

It didn’t matter that I already knew how my peeps would come down on the issue—by inviting them to discuss it, I got a lot more people to comment on that post than my posts usually get.

Got a question about how to make this work for your blog? Ask in the comments below and we’ll do a little blogstorming together.

  1. Controversial tends to be a big no-no but I know a bunch of bloggers that make that topic their main focus. I say…do what makes you happy. It's just a blog.
